Hugh Sawrey worked at countless properties up down the country doing the back breaking work of shearing. This type of work was one the few employment options available for some one wanted to live and survive in the rural regions of Australia.

This particular work is a typical Sawrey showing the shearing shed and yards of a typical wool property. He has evoked sublime weather effects to give an ethereal mood to what was tedious and low paid work with little prospect for advancement. Nonetheless it was a romantic if coarse facet of Australian rural culture that he was able to evoke with deceptive ease .
